Cottage Pie with Apples
Recipe type: Entree
This Cottage Pie is a British food recipe with sausage and apples.
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1 lb pork sausage meat or ground beef
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 4 sage leaves, chopped fine
  • 2 tbsp parsley, minced
  • 1 tbsp sharp mustard
  • 1⁄2 cup water
  • 1 tbsp flour mixed with
  • 1 tbsp water
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp (or more) milk
  • salt, pepper, nutmeg to taste
  • 8 potatoes, peeled, boiled and mashed
  • 2 large tart apples, peeled, cored and thickly sliced
  1. In a saucepan, heat oil over medium heat; fry meat, stirring constantly until brown.
  2. Stir in onion; fry until softened.
  3. Add herbs, salt, pepper, mustard, and water. Cover; reduce heat to lowest; simmer for 20 minutes.
  4. Stir in flour mixture to thicken gravy; simmer for another 1–2 minutes.
  5. Blend butter, milk, salt, pepper, and nutmeg into mashed potatoes. The mash should be dry, not soggy.
  6. Lightly butter a 9 by 13 inch casserole dish. Place layer of apple slices and then meat.
  7. Cover completely with potato mash.
  8. Smooth top and draw a pattern with a fork.
  9. Place in preheated (425F) oven for 15 minutes.
  10. Reduce heat to 350F; cook for 20 minutes more, or until mash is browned at edges and the inside is piping hot.
